The Tulsa Roughnecks run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup came to a disappointing end Wednesday night to their state rivals at ONEOK Field. The Roughnecks dropped a 1-0 decision to the Oklahoma Energy in a third round matchup in downtown Tulsa.

The lone goal of the match came on an impressive strike from distance from substitute Peter Toth in the 82nd minute. The goal proved to be the difference in the closely contested derby.

The victory sent the Energy into the fourth round of the Cup and a meeting with MLS side FC Dallas.

The match came during a busy period for both clubs, and it began cautiously. Each side had chances, but goalkeepers Zac Lubin and Evan Newton kept clean sheets through the first 45 minutes.

Tulsa opened the second half with more urgency and created several chances to produce the game's first goal. Steven Miller fired high from the edge of the box, and Eli Galbraith-Knapp forced a save from Newton.

Roughnecks coach David Irving called on substitutes Kidd Nwabueze and Andy Lorei in search of the first goal. Twice, Kidd set up Galbraith-Knapp with chances, but both times the Tulsa midfielder shot over the goal.

The game winner came from Toth, who entered the match in the 62nd minute. The forward found himself in space outside the box in the 82nd minute and fired. His strike beat Lubin in the upper left corner of the goal and gave the Energy the lead.

Tulsa spent the remaining time of regulation and the three added minutes in search of the equalizer, but it would not come.

The defeat means the Roughnecks can now turn their attention to USL play. They will be back in action Saturday night when they host Portland Timbers 2 at ONEOK Field.

It will be the first match that the Roughnecks will wear their alternate kits that are modeled after the first uniforms worn by the original Roughnecks during the 1978 season. Kickoff is slated for 7:30PM in downtown Tulsa.
