West Texas Roughnecks News Release
MIDLAND, TX. : The Roughnecks traveled to Arkansas to face the Diamonds on Saturday evening, May 1. Without starting quarterback Tommy Jones, who missed the ball game due to a concussion that occurred last Saturday, the Roughnecks turned to back-up quarterback Devin Campbell to lead the offense. The Roughnecks kept things close throughout the first-half, however the Diamonds went on to outscore the Roughnecks 21-0 in the third quarter by capitalizing off Roughnecks turnovers and clinch a 73-28 win to drop the Roughnecks to 2-6 on the season.
After the Roughnecks defense had stopped the Diamonds on fourth down to open the ball game, Arkansas would register the first score of the game as DL Luis Vasquez recovered and returned a DeWayne Hogan fumble back for a score to make it 7-0.
After the Roughnecks had closed the gap at 7-3 following a Zeke Arevalo field goal, Arkansas would go on to score 23 points in the second quarter. WR Coco Blalock returned a missed Zeke Arevalo field goal back for a score to give Arkansas a 17-3 lead. The Roughnecks would counter with a three-yard touchdown run from RB Jorvorskie Lane to make it 17-9.
Arkansas would expand their lead to 23-9 when WR Steven Savoy posted a short touchdown run mid-way through the second quarter. Following a touchdown pass from Arkansas QB Brian Jones to RB A.J. Harris, the Roughnecks cut the lead to 30-16 when QB Devin Campbell found WR Dexter Henderson for a 21-yard touchdown pass.
The Roughnecks opened the second-half with the football and had an opportunity to cut the Diamonds lead to a one-score deficit. However, the Roughnecks failed to pick-up a first down, and after a mishandled snap on a field goal attempt the Diamonds posted an early third quarter score on a one-yard touchdown run from Brian Jones making it 37-16.
Arkansas would go on to shut-out the Roughnecks in the third quarter and register two more scores to expand their lead to 51-16 at the end of the quarter. Roughnecks QB Devin Campbell would throw for two more touchdown passes in the fourth quarter but the Roughnecks could not overcome the large deficit set by the Diamonds and drop their second-straight ball game at 73-28. The Arkansas Diamonds have won five straight ball games as they improve to 7-1 and they remain at home next weekend when they face the Omaha Beef on Saturday, May 8. The Roughnecks drop to 2-6 with the loss and they remain on the road next weekend when they take on the Austin Turfcats on Saturday, May 8.
