Bloomington Extreme News Release
OMAHA, (Neb.)-In an important conference game, the Bloomington Extreme (3-5) played lackadaisically as the Omaha Beef rolled the Extreme, 25-66. The Extreme could not accomplish anything on either side of the ball, as Omaha had clear control of this contest from the first snap.
Rocky Hinds had trouble finding his wide receivers for most of the game, completing just 19 of 46 passing for 218 yards with two interceptions and two rushing touchdowns. Bernard Payton carried the ball nine times for 39 yards and a single touchdown. While the ball was distributed evenly throughout the wide receiver core, John Cooper caught four passes for 64 yards, most of which were stand-out plays.
On the Omaha side, Ben Sankey was extremely efficient, completing 13 of 15 passing for 121 yards and two touchdowns. R. J. Rollins did the most damage to the Extreme, rushing 14 times for 67 yards and he found the end zone four times. Luke McArdle streaked through the Extreme secondary, catching three passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns.
Omaha received the ball to begin the game and wasted no time marching down the field. R.J. Rollins picked up the workload, with three rushing plays. The last of these runs being a six yard scamper into the end zone, putting Omaha up 7-0 in the first.
Bloomington started the game on their one yard line with Rocky Hinds at quarterback. Hinds' second pass of the game was an interception to Beef defender Shawn Piper. Omaha had a chance to take a significant lead on Bloomington, but a sack by Jeff Candler keeps the Beef out of the end zone. Omaha kicker Shane Longest then missed a field goal, keeping the lead only to one score.
Sullivan leaped in the air to catch a 14 yard pass from Hinds on Bloomington's next drive. On a designed quarterback keep, Hinds runs the ball down to the one yard line. Bernard Payton fumbles the ball on the next play, but it is recovered by Hinds and he waltzes into the end zone, putting Bloomington on the board, 7-7.
On the ensuing kickoff, Cortney Grixby botches the catch and is almost taken down at the one yard line, but breaks free and goes the distance for an Omaha touchdown, 14-7.
Omaha began the second quarter with the ball, and Sankey took command on this drive. The Bloomington secondary had a tough time containing the Omaha wide receivers, as Sankey distributed the ball evenly to his receivers. Rollins made a second appearance in the end zone, scoring again and increasing the Omaha lead, 21-7.
With the game beginning to get away from them, Bloomington needed to make something happen. On a crucial third and six play, Johnny Gray makes a diving catch right into the wall that kept the drive alive. Payton breaks through the line of scrimmage with an 11 yard dash, but then the Bloomington offense stagnates. Pete Christofilakos had to boot a field goal, bringing the score to 10-21.
Grixby once again is able to return a kickoff for a touchdown, and in a matter of seconds Bloomington is down 10-28.
Bloomington was in desperate need of a score before the half. Unfortunately Hinds first throw of the drive goes directly to Omaha defender, Patrick Wells, recording his second interception of the evening. Luke McArdle scores on a deep pass, quickly putting the Beef up 10-35.
Hinds makes a few good passes to Harry Lewis and Johnny Gray on his next drive, but Omaha defensive lineman, Chris Bradford sacks Hinds, taking the Extreme all the way back to their own 18 yard line. Hinds can not find an open wide receiver in the end zone and a turnover is forced on downs. With six seconds left in the half, Longest kicks a 38 yard field goal and tacks on another three points, increasing the lead to 10-38 before the end of the half.
The Extreme had much ground to cover in the second half, but could not pull it together. The first drive for the Extreme starts with Hinds airing out some big passes to his wide. However a load of completions is followed by a load of missed opportunities and Christofilakos must kick another field goal to put some meager points on the board, 13-38.
With Bloomington's hopes dwindling, Omaha is on the offensive once more. Sankey finds McArdle again and with one swift juke, he streaks to the end zone, adding to the embarrassment, 13-45.
J.R. Rollins continues his career night as he rolls into the end zone for his thirdscore, putting the game even further out of reach for the Extreme, 13-52
Thanks to an illegal blitz penalty, the Extreme find themselves on the goal line in a redemption attempt. The help from the referees allows Hinds to squeeze into the end zone, taking the score to 19-52, as Bloomington went for two and could not convert.
R.J. Rollins played an amazing game, as he earns his fourth touchdown of the game on Omaha's next drive, taking the score to 19-59.
Mike Jones scored one more easy touchdown for Omaha as Sankey tossed up the ball to the back of the end zone, further humiliating the Bloomington defense, 19-66.
Hinds sneaks into the end zone to score the last touchdown of the game, but misses the two-point conversion, 25-66.
Next week the Extreme look to redeem themselves at home against division rival, the La Crosse Spartans, at 7:00 p.m. La Crosse is at the bottom of the division with a 1-7, and the Extreme desperately need this win in order to keep their play-off hopes alive.
