Calgary, AB - The Calgary Roughnecks were narrowly defeated 12-11 by the Vancouver Stealth in their 2017 home opener presented by Metro.
After trailing 7-2 early in the second quarter, DeWinton, Alberta, native and Roughnecks forward Holden Cattoni scored his first career National Lacrosse League goal. Of Calgary's six first-half markers, five different Roughnecks found the back of the net as the home club headed into halftime trailing 9-6.
Calgary and Vancouver combined for just three goals in the third quarter as the visiting Stealth had outshot the Roughnecks 46-28 through 45 minutes of play.
The hosts scored the game's final four goals but now sit at 0-1 on the season after being unable to find the equalizer before time expired.
With goaltender Frank Scigliano serving a one-game suspension, Christian Del Bianco received the start for Calgary. He and fellow netminder Zach Higgins - who was signed to the roster in Scigliano's absence - split time between the pipes. The pair combined for 45 saves on 57 shots.
Curtis Dickson led the Riggers with five points (one goal, four assists) while Corey Small had a game-high eight points (three goals, five assists) for the Stealth.
Week 3 of the 2017 regular season will see the Roughnecks complete a home-and-home set with the Stealth when the return match goes Saturday, Jan. 14 at 8:00 p.m. MT, at the Langley Events Centre.
