Peoria Rough Riders News Release

The Peoria Rough Riders spotted the Tupelo 3 and then never looked back as they smoked the Fire Ants 62 - 10 Saturday Night at Carver Arena. After a John Marlin bare footed field goal put the Fire Ants up 3 - 0 for the only lead they'd have on the evening the Rough Riders roared back and played a full 4 quarter game scoring 8 touchdowns and recording 6 sacks with 9 tackles for a loss.

First, Walt Church hit Shonn Bell with a 36 yard bomb to put the Riders up 7-0 after Matt Russell's PAT. For Bell it was a signature Shonn Bell play as he made a tough catch and muscled his way over the goal line and refused to be denied the Endzone carrying a defensive back with him. Russell hit a Field Goal forty-six seconds into the 2nd quarter to put the Riders up 10-0.

It was Brandon Robinson's time to shine after that. On the evening the shifty speedster scored three touchdowns gaining 88 yards on the ground in 189 carries. He added 10 more yards to his nightly total receiving and a kickoff return for 12 more. Robinson scored from 2 yards out followed by Tony Pryor from 2 and a Walt Church rollout from the two. The Fire Ants wedged in a Adrian Cockfield 12 yard td catch but by the end of the first half it was 31-10 Rough Riders.

The Riders Defense matched the Offense prowess in this game. Marcus James started the fireworks with a brilliant interception in which he knifed across the passing lane and speared the Tommy Miller pass early in the game. James returned that pass 12 yards to set up a Rough Rider score. Tony Pryor and Martell Foster both contributed with interceptions at key moments swaying momentum back to the Peoria side.

The Rough Riders line and Linebacking Corp harassed the Fire Ants QB Tommy Miller all night long with multiple sacks, hurries and hard hits. Both Jason VanLoo and Mike O'Brien were credited with 2 sacks each. Clint Alexander had a sack and a half shared with Noah Washington. In all the Fire Ants lost 36 yards on 6 sacks. In addition the Riders defense caught the Fire Ants behind the line of scrimmage 9 times in the game for a total loss of 41 yards. Jason VanLoo led all tacklers with 9 total, 7 solo and 4 assists. Tony Pryor recorded 5 solo and 5 assists and Kevin Meyers notched 5 tackles all solo.

In the second half it was the Dodie and B-Rob show. Both Backs Brandon Robinson and Codolyous Wilson each scored two touchdowns. Robinson with a 27 yard backbreaker in the 3rd quarter and Wilson with a 16 yard scamper at 11:06 of the fourth quarter that finished the scoring for the night. Wilson finished the night with 6 rushed for 34 yards and two touchdowns as well as 2 kickoff returns for 51 yards.

The Rough Riders gained 126 yards on the ground to the Fire Ants 21 and had 101 yards passing to the Tupelo total of 54. In all the Riders total offensive output of 227 yards was three times that of Tupelo's total of 75.

The Rough Riders are home again next week. They meet the Fort Wayne Freedom next Saturday Night at 7:05 at Carver Arena.
