Long Island Rough Riders News Release

Manchester, NH - The Long Island Rough Riders ended the 2005 season with a 2-1 loss to the New Hampshire Phantoms at Southern New Hampshire University Saturday night.

The Rough Riders came into the match missing key players from their starting lineup. Due to an accumulation of yellow card points, Jose Sura and Team Captain Wilmer Cabrera were ineligible to play. In addition, Laurence Piturro, earning a red card against the Western Mass Pioneers on August 10th, was required to sit out the game.

New Hampshire had the best scoring opportunity in the first half. Phantoms midfielder James Proctor was stopped on a breakaway by Rough Riders keeper Paul Grafer in the 20th minute to keep the scoreboard clear.

Long Island and New Hampshire were evenly matched in the first half. Their only statistical difference was the number of fouls committed, with the Phantoms being called for 8 fouls while the Rough Riders committed 6.

The second half saw the scoring picking up. In the 50th minute, James Proctor made a cross behind the Rough Riders defensive line and onto the foot of Marc Hubbard, placing it past Grafer for the 1-0 Phantoms lead.

New Hampshire's second goal came off a breakaway in the 76th minute. Forward Thomas McNeil received a pass from Rensen Haynes and beat Grafer to increase the lead to 2-0.

The Rough Riders finally got on the scoreboard in the 77th minute, when Derrick Etienne converted on a penalty kick to make it 2-1 and give the Rough Riders a chance. Long Island would never get any closer than that, losing 2-1.

Long Island finishes the season with a record of 7-13. With New Hampshire's win, giving them a record of 6-11-3, that leaves the Rough Riders and the Phantoms in a tie for sixth place and out of playoff contention.

Final Score New Hampshire Phantoms 2- Long Island Rough Riders 1
