May 8, 2006 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release
Plainview, NY (May 8, 2006) - The Long Island Rough Riders, member of the USL 2nd Division, will be taking on El Salvadorian Champions 'Vista Hermosa' in an exhibition game this Wednesday - May 10th at 7:00pm at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY.
Vista Hermosa won the Copa Pilsner 'Apertura' Championship for the first time on December 18, 2005. Mario Deras (108th) and Dagoberto Portillo (118th) both scored in extra time to defeat AD Isidoro Metepan and earn the Liga Mayor Championship. Now in the second half of their season, the Copa Coca Cola 'Clausura', Vista Hermosa is currently tied for fourth in the ten-team El Salvadorian 1st Division with a record of 6 wins-2 draws-8 losses, earning 20 points.
The Long Island Rough Riders come into the exhibition having lost their first two games of their USL D2 regular season schedule. The team comes off a difficult 5-0 loss to the Richmond Kickers this past Saturday. The road match was decided early on when starting goalkeeper Eric Masters was given a straight red card for a hand ball outside the box trying to stop a Richmond break-away from their counter attack. With no second keeper on the trip, and down to only 10 players, Head Coach Flavio Ferri was forced to give forward Moussa Sy the goalkeepers' gloves.
The score was only 1-0 at the end of the first half when a shot was deflected off defender Rich Bradley and re-directed for a Richmond goal in the 20th minute. Up a man, and facing a converted keeper, Richmond finally broke through with continued pressure, scoring three 3 goals in the 67th, 74th and 75th minute. They added one final tally in injury time.
After the exhibition game with Vista Hermosa, the Rough Riders will be back on the road to face the New Hampshire Phantoms on May 20th. The Long Island Rough Riders return home on May 27th to host Richmond Kickers for 'Modell's Pack-Pak Night'. The first 2,000 fans through the gate that night will receive a free Modell's string back-pak.
