Cincinnati Kings News Release
CINCINNATI--The Cincinnati Kings saved the best for last Saturday night as the Kings dethroned the Northern Virginia Royals, 4-1, in the Kings' final game of their inaugural season.
In front of a record crowd of 1,709 at the Xavier University Soccer Complex, the Kings scored early and often, starting in the 14th minute with a goal by midfielder Bret Jones, with the assist from Jack Cummings. The score was 2-0 Kings 10 minutes later on a Moussa Dagnogo goal, with the assist going to Jon Pickup.
The Kings kept the torrid scoring pace going in the second half, with goals in the 49th minute by John Liersemann and the 53rd minute by Josh Barton. The Royals' lone goal didn't come until the 82nd minute when the outcome was all but sealed.
"This game was a nice way to end the season," said Head Coach Pickup. "The crowd here deserved a good performance."
The Kings dominated on offense from the beginning, with 10 shots on goal in the first half alone. The Kings ended with a team record 29 shots on goal for the night to the Royals' three. Kings goalie Brian Schaeper was credited with one save, while Northern Virginia goalkeeper Brian Chidester had 10 saves.
The Kings end their inaugural season with a 7-8-5 record, one spot out of the playoff chase in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division. The Royals wrap up the season at 2-18-0.
"When you look back on our first season, we have to be happy with what we achieved, but disappointed in not making the playoffs," said Pickup. "That gives us a goal to aim for next year."
