Rough Middle Innings Sink Gresham in Game 2

June 16, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Gresham GreyWolves News Release

The GreyWolves put five runs on the board in the last third of the ballgame, but a deficit as big as eight runs proved to be too much for Gresham who dropped the series to Victoria at Royal Athletic Park on Wednesday night. Center fielder Ryan Smith (Southern Illinois) paced the GreyWolves' offensive attack with two hits.

After being shut out by the HarbourCats on Tuesday, Gresham was baffled by Victoria pitching once again through five innings in Game 2. A second inning leadoff single by Smith marked the only GreyWolves' hit through five innings of action.

While Victoria was keeping Gresham silent on one end, the HarbourCats began scoring runs at a rapid pace on the other end. Ben Polshuk (Cal Poly) gave Victoria's offense a big boost by blasting two home runs. The home team plated a run in the second, two in the fourth, three in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh in what proved to be a constant barrage of scoring. The HarbourCats tallied 14 total hits on the night.

The GreyWolves plated their first run of the series in the seventh inning. Jack Bauer opened up the frame with a single and came around to score on a Michael Breen single. Gresham pushed across four more in the eighth to make things interesting, cutting the deficit to 9-5. Three consecutive run-scoring plays came in the form of a Jack Johnson RBI double, a Nick Snyder RBI groundout and a Ty Wyatt RBI single. Jeffrey Mitchell Jr. capped off the GreyWolves' scoring in the inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk.

Gresham will look to salvage one game in its trip north of the border before returning home to face Kelowna on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. First pitch in the series finale from Victoria on Thursday is set for 12:35 p.m. The game will once again be streamed live at GreshamGreyWolves.com/Listen.
