HOOVER, Ala. â- Six successive hits in the fifth inning by the Birmingham Barons led to a 5-0 defeat of the Suns on Thursday in front of 2,509 fans at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
Suns starter Heath Totten (3-3) had shut out the Barons through four innings and retired the first two batters in the fifth before allowing six straight hits â including three doubles â which gave Birmingham a 4-0 lead.
The Suns (16-17) had six hits â all singles â in the game and struck out 15 times, leading to the team's fifth consecutive loss. Jacksonville has been shut out five times this season.
Barons starter Neal Cotts (5-1) walked five, but worked out of a one-out, bases loaded jam in the second and a first and second situation with one out in the fourth inning. He pitched five innings with Jeff Bajenaru and Matt Smith each following with two innings of scoreless relief.
Brennan King led the Suns with three hits. Scott Bikowski had three hits for the Barons (15-17).
Right-hander Edwin Jackson (1-2, 2.67 ERA) is scheduled to face Barons righty Enemencio Pacheco (2-0, 1.14) at 7 p.m. Central from Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Jackson is the youngest player in the Southern League.
