Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Former Irondequoit High School midfielder and Florida Panthers defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick will serve as a celebrity judge at the Rochester Rattlers and Knighthawks Chicken Wing Contest. Fitzpatrick will attend the latest installment on Thursday, July 24th at 1:00 p.m. at Casey's (689 Ridgeway Ave.).
Knighthawks and Rattlers broadcaster Craig Rybczynski, Communications Coordinator Warren Kosel, and lacrosse fan Bill Blummer will also sample the wings at Casey's.
Fitzpatrick played varsity lacrosse as a freshman at Irondequoit High School and won a Section V title. The budding lacrosse star turned his attention to hockey the following season. He made the right decision as he enters his 14th season as a professional in 2008-09.
Fitzpatrick signed with the National Hockey League team on July 3rd. The 34-year-old defenseman joins the Panthers' organization after splitting the 2007-08 season with the Philadelphia Flyers and Phantoms. In 19 games at the NHL level, Fitzpatrick recorded one assist and 11 PIM while picking up five points (1+4) and 24 penalty minutes in 19 American Hockey League contests.
The Rochester native is likely to return to play in his hometown after spending parts of three seasons (2001-03, 2004-05) registering 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points in 121 games in the red, white and blue.
In 287 career NHL games with Montreal, St. Louis, Nashville, Buffalo, Vancouver and Philadelphia, "Fitzie" has compiled 35 points (10+25) and six points (1+5) in 20 postseason contests. At the AHL level, Fitzpatrick has picked up 138 points (35+103) in 384 career games with Fredericton, Worcester, Hamilton, Rochester and Philadelphia.
Fitzpatrick will rate the wings at Casey's as part of the Rattlers and Knighthawks 12-stop, three-month tour of Rochester to determine, "Who has the best wings in town". The Rattlers and Knighthawks will crown the "King of the Wing" in late August prior to the Major League Lacrosse Final Four Weekend (August 23-24).
Each restaurant/bar will receive a rating of one to four, with four being the highest mark. The judges will sample traditional wings, extra hot and the store's signature wing. The panel will also score the blue cheese and celery at each stop. Lastly, the ambiance could factor into the decision with photos, décor and famous patrons playing a role. The critiques will be posted on the team's official websites two days after the events. Rochesterratlers.com will also include a photo gallery of the visit.
The winner will receive an autographed Rattlers or Knighthawks jersey to hang in their store and a plaque from the teams symbolizing their achievement.
