Richmond Roosters News Release
The Richmond Roosters and Kenosha Mammoths will have to wait a week to determine the outcome of the second game of their series. Rain forced play to be suspended Friday night at McBride Stadium after the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie through seven innings of play. The game will be resumed next week when the Roosters open up a two game series at Kenosha.
The Mammoths were able to win the first game of the series 7-5 on Thursday night, even though they were out-hit by the Roosters 13-7. A game that featured four walks and six errors surrendered by Roosters will be looked back on as one that the team let slip away. Drew Miller led the Roosters' offense by recording four hits in five at-bats, while Tanner Townsend provided all the power the Mammoths needed, going three for four with a home run.
The game Friday night was delayed an hour and fifteen minutes before the rain stopped, allowing the teams to play seven innings before returning. The Mammoths jumped on starter Travis Holland in the first inning to score their only two runs for the night. A towering home run by Phil Willingham tied the game just in time in the bottom of the sixth. By end of the seventh a drizzle increased to a steady rain, forcing the game to be suspended until June 19.
The Rockford RiverHawks visit McBride Stadium next for a two-game weekend series. The festivities will include the return of Bill Kamp's Famous Flying Frisbee Dogs and the Stegall Berheide Orr Fan Giveaway. The starting times are 6:35 on Saturday evening and 4:35 on Sunday afternoon.
ROOSTERS EARN DISAPPOINTING SPLIT WITH ROCKFORD
The Richmond Roosters lost a one run lead in the ninth inning Sunday evening, as the Rockford RiverHawks were able to sneak away with a 2-1 victory to wrap up the six-game inter-divisional home stand. The loss allowed Rockford to earn a split in the two-game series. The ninth inning of Sunday's game was the only inning in which Rockford held a lead all weekend.
The Roosters took the first game of the series Saturday night as they took advantage of some Rockford miscues. Richmond was able to push across three unearned runs in the first inning, and used patient at-bats all night long to scrape together seven runs on just eight hits. The big hit came from Blake Leverett who laced a two-out single into right field that drove in two runs, extending the lead to four runs. The final score was 7-4.
Sunday game was a pitcher's duel that went into the ninth inning with only one run crossing the plate. Rockford relied on the services of starter Jason Shelley for all nine innings while the Roosters found strength in numbers by rotating through five pitchers. Jeremy Robinson, who last pitched for the team in 2000, started the game for the Roosters and was impressive, pitching three innings without allowing a hit. The Roosters scored their lone run in the fifth inning when designated hitter Kris Zacuto scored on a ground ball hit by third baseman Blake Leverett.
Unfortunately, the Roosters ended the home stand on a sour note as the RiverHawks rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to record a 2-1 victory. Six of the Roosters' nine losses this season have been by one run.
The Roosters finished the home stand with a 2-3 record. The team has Monday off before they travel to Cook County on Tuesday to start a six game road trip.
