Richmond Roosters News Release
Florence, Kentucky â The Richmond Roosters fell short in their one-and-only pre-season game Saturday night at Champion Windows Field against the Florence Freedom. The Freedom got out to an early lead by scoring two runs in the third inning on a home run by Galindo Gomez. The Roosters were shutout for the first three innings behind the strong performance from Jason Bowlin, the Freedom starting pitcher, who retired all nine batters he faced. The Roosters got a run in the fourth inning when Gerald Miller scored on a sacrifice fly from Blake Woods and a couple more in the fifth inning when Joe Cuervo hit a two-run home run to left field. The Roosters were down 3-2 in the top of the eighth when Gerald Miller tripled down the right field line to lead off the inning. A hit by Mike Reese in the next at-bat scored Miller to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Florence led off with a double by Elliot Joyner who moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and finally scored on a long single to left-center by Brandon Cornell to win the game 4-3.
The offensive player of the night was Miller, he went 2-for-3, tripled, and scored two runs. Joe Cuervo went 1-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI.
Mike White was the starting pitching for the Roosters and worked himself out of a jam in the first inning on his way to pitching two shutout innings. In all, the Roosters used six pitchers to complete the exhibition game. Curt Moenter, Chris Jakabauskas, Fred Moses, Jamie Gonzalez, and Brian Chapman all saw time on the hill. Florence used five pitchers to get the win.
The Roosters open the 2005 regular season Wednesday, May 25th at McBride Stadium against the Freedom. Opening night will also be "Logos Imaging Baseball Card Night" with the first 1,000 fans receiving a four card set that features four players and coaches from the 2005 Richmond Roosters.
