RiverHawks sweep exhibition doubleheader

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks finished the spring-training schedule with a three-game winning streak after sweeping the Windy City ThunderBolts, 10-8 and 3-0, in an exhibition doubleheader on Saturday at Marinelli Field.

In the opener, the RiverHawks blew a 6-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom half to win. John Chappell singled in the tying run, then scored the winning run on Rico Santana's groundout.

Jesen Merle evened his exhibition record with a win in relief. Lance Odom gave up four unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth and lost.

In the nightcap, the RiverHawks scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. In the second inning, Olmo Rosario hit into a force out, then stole second and third bases. He tagged up and scored when Rico Santana hit a foul popup deep to Windy City first baseman Matt Singer, who was forced to make an over-the-shoulder catch with his momentum carrying him away from the infield.

Rockford starter Wes Mindingall struck out four in four shutout innings for the win. Derrick Ellison pitched a perfect eighth for the save. Windy City starter Felix Matta gave up two runs on three hits in three innings and took the loss.

The RiverHawks open the regular season with a 12-game road trip next week. The season opener is at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Gateway. The home opener is at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, when the River City Rascals come to town.

The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 13th season in 2005.
