Florida Seals News Release
[CELEBRATION, Fla]. - First year athletes are always put under the microscope from the first time they step into training camp. Despite what they may have done in the past, they always seem to need to prove something.
Coach Tommy Stewart and the Florida Seals are hoping to see potential turn into success as they announced that rookies Beau Moyer and Cedrick Bernier have agreed to terms and will be joining the team in October. The pair join Chad Haacke as first-year pros who will be looking to make their mark in the SPHL in 2006-2007.
Moyer, a native of North Bay, Ontario, comes to the Seals following a stellar career at the University of Wisconsin Superior. In his four years, Moyer showed talents both as a scorer and assist man as he totaled 19 goals and 28 assists in 52 games during his junior and senior seasons. His leadership skills also earned him a captain's letter from the Yellow Jackets' coaches.
"He's going to be a great addition. He's got great speed, great hands and is very feisty as well," Stewart said about Moyer. "He's probably going to be a second or third line player on our team."
Moyer believes his particular style of play will fit well into Stewart's team system.
"I'm a good playmaker. I see the ice well," Moyer said. "I'm good at making my teammates around me better."
He is also very excited to get a chance with the Seals.
"I want to show everybody what I can do as a player," he said. "I want to make an impact."
Like Moyer, Cedrick Bernier is looking to show Seals fans what he can do.
Bernier, a 22 year old forward from Quebec, comes from a family that is, well, absolutely Canadian. His father laced up the skates in the day. Cedrick's two brothers, Jonathan and Yannick, also play the game. Oh, and by the way, the boys are triplets.
"Hockey is very important to my family," Cedrick said.
From early on, Bernier was tabbed by his coaches as an enforcer type. At 6'3" and about 215 pounds, he became an instant hit with his teammates. In 2004-2005 while with the Charlevoix Caron & Guay in the CQSHL, he scored three goals, added one assist and racked up 84 penalty minutes in 29 games. The following year, his numbers were similar for Les Sentinelles de Montmagny Senior AAA team - no goals and four assists - but his PIMs nearly doubled to 177 in 22 regular season games plus seven more in the playoffs.
"I'm a physical, tough player," said Bernier, who dropped his gloves 25 times in those 29 games for the Sentinelles. "I found that I was very appreciated by my teammates for it."
Coach Stewart was impressed with what he saw and heard about Bernier.
"He comes highly recommended. He definitely can handle himself," Stewart said. "He's going to be our heavyweight."
"He's a kid that has the passion to play so he's going to be a great addition to our hockey club," the coach added. "He'll take care of business and let our players play. He's going to be a good entertainer."
Bernier is looking forward to joining the Seals and enjoying some of the benefits of playing in Central Florida.
"I know that the Seals are a great team and a great organization to play for," he said. "I'm also looking forward to the warm temperatures, too."
"I will do anything for the team," he continued. "I'm ready to show everyone how I can play."
