Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen - For the second time this season, San Angelo Colts starter Kenny Elkind (3-0) held the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings bats down as the WhiteWings fell 10-1 tonight at Harlingen Field.
Elkind had his longest outing of the season, going six innings, scattering three hits and one walk while striking out three. The only run he allowed to the WhiteWings (17-22) came in the third inning. Down 4-0, Casey Allen hit a one-out triple and scored on a wild pitch.
The Colts (27-12) got on the board right away against Eric Domangue (0-2) and Juan Jimenez. Ronnie Gaines led off with a single and stole second. Bryan Frichter drew a one-out walk but was erased when Jason Landreth reached on a fielder's choice, moving Gaines to third. That was it for Domangue, who had trouble loosening his arm and had to be replaced by Jimenez. Josh Collazo hit an RBI-single and Nick Mahin followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0. Hunter Jobes followed with a single. Mahin tried to score, but the throw to the plate beat him and Justin Holloway blocked the plate and held onto the ball despite a collision to record the out. Although Holloway stayed down for several minutes, he walked off the field under his own power. Holloway wanted to remain in the game, but was replaced by Sandy DeLeon for precautionary reasons.
Butch Ballez and Cody Pride led off the second inning with singles. Two outs later, Frichter hit an RBI-single to make it 4-0.
Jason Diaz led off the fifth with a single and Frichter followed with a bunt-single. Landreth walked to load the bases, but after a strikeout of Collazo, a wild pitch scored Diaz and moved Frichter to third, allowing him to score one a groundout by Mahin to make it 6-1.
Frichter led off the seventh with a single and stole second. He moved to third on a fly-out by Landreth and scored on a single by Collazo to make it 7-1.
The Colts added three runs in the ninth against Todd Lutz. Frichter led off with a single. Landreth and Collazo followed with walks. Mahin hit an RBI-infield-single. Jobes followed with a two-run double to make it 10-1.
The WhiteWings and Colts play game four of this four-game series tomorrow morning at 11:05 at Harlingen Field. Seven-year Major League veteran Jesus Sanchez will pitch for the WhiteWings against two-year Houston Astro and current San Angelo Colt Ezequiel Astacio. It is the first time in United League Baseball history that the starting pitchers for both clubs in the same game have experience pitching in Major League Baseball.
The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fourth season, the United League is in the midst of a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Harlingen and San Angelo.
