Rookie sensaction added to Rayz roster
July 12, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
The Corpus Christi Rayz signed free agent forward Kevin Watters for the 2006-2007 season, Rayz General Manager Larry Linde announced Wednesday afternoon. As a rookie last season in the UHL, Watters recorded 71 points (36 goals, 35 assists) and 67 penalty minutes in 75 games. He becomes the third player to sign with the Rayz this season, and the first newcomer of the year to the Coastal Bend.
Watters made a splash onto the scene as a first year forward last season with the Adirondack Frostbite. Just 23 years old, the Pittsford, NY native led the Frostbite in goals, and was third on the team in points. Watters finished his first pro season ranked 6th in rookie goal scoring and 7th in rookie points. Completing his stand-out, inaugural year, Watters was elected to the UHL All-Star Game and earned a brief call up to the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators - the AAA affiliate of the National Hockey League's Ottawa Senators.
Standing 6'4" and weighing 225 lbs., Watters is able to create time and space for himself on the ice and has proven to be deadly with both. A valuable weapon on special teams, Watters tallied 16 power play goals to finish tied for second among rookies, and added three shorthanded goals. Rayz Head Coach Ken McRae said he expects Watters to have similar success in his sophomore season.
"It's no secret that we're looking to add more goal scoring, and Kevin's a big kid with a great shot, and superb touch around the net." said McRae. "With 36 goals as a rookie, we think he will come into Corpus Christi and help us. He's terrific on the power play, and that's an element that we missed badly last year. He'll be another great offensive weapon on the left side to go along with the return of Jason Baird."
Prior to turning pro, Watters spent four seasons of college hockey at the NCAA program SUNY-Cortland. In his collegiate career, Watters had 38 goals and 63 assists for 101 points in 108 games. He also added 164 penalty minutes.
The Corpus Christi Rayz are currently in preparation for the 2006-2007 season. The Rayz return to the American Bank Center is only 101 days away. Corpus Christi has scheduled their home opener on October 21st. Season ticket packages and corporate sponsorship opportunities are currently available.
