MEDFORD, OR - The Medford Rogues defeated the Klamath Falls Gems 8-2 tonight at Harry & David Field, completing their second consecutive series sweep and extending their winning streak to six games. At the same time the Rogues set a new West Coast League record for wins by an expansion team with 20, breaking the record set by Klamath Falls in 2011.
Medford jumped on top early scoring two runs in the second inning off two RBI singles by infielder Joe Chavez and outfielder Spencer Smith.
The Gems tied the game in the fourth inning 2-2 but the Rogues gained the lead right back in the bottom of the inning after a two-run single by Chavez.
Rogues starter Mason Stidham pitched four innings of play giving up two runs on four hits. Pitcher John Forsythe (3-0) came in relief of Stidham earning the win after allowing only one hit through two innings.
Chavez led the Rogues at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored while raising his batting average to .305. Smith went 2-for-5 with one RBI and a run scored while outfielder A.J. Balta finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
With the sixth consecutive win, the Rogues improve to 20-19 overall and move to third place in the West Coast League's South Division. Medford sits at four games out of first place with only the Corvallis Knights and the Bend Elks ahead of them.
The Rogues will take a couple days off for the 2013 All-Star game in Victoria before heading to Corvallis for a crucial three game series on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
