Roger Dean Stadium To Honor Buck Kinnaird

Jupiter, FL - Jupiter Stadium, Ltd. in conjunction with the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals announced today that the press box at Roger Dean Stadium will be named after longtime Palm Beach sportscaster, Buck Kinnaird. The announcement was made by Joe Pinto, General Manager of Jupiter Stadium, Ltd.

The unveiling ceremony of the press box plaque will take place tomorrow, April 1, at 11:30 AM at the main entrance of the press box. The Marlins and Cardinals will then play their final RDS Grapefruit League game at 12:05 PM, before both clubs hit the road to finish their spring training exhibition schedules.

Mr. Kinnaird was a colorful and very popular television sports personality in Palm Beach County for over 20 years, covering many historic sporting events and personalities, while delivering insightful stories on current topics as a sportscaster and sports director for WPTV. After enlisting in the Navy when he was 17 and serving in the South Pacific, he found himself behind the microphone as the public-address announcer for the New York Yankees at their spring training facility in Fort Lauderdale. That led to his WPTV debut in West Palm Beach on March 2, 1962 where he stayed until retiring in 1983.

"On behalf of Jupiter Stadium, Ltd., the Marlins and Cardinals, we are very pleased to have the opportunity to formally acknowledge a person who gave so much of his time to help serve our community, stadium and sports fans for many decades," said Pinto. "Mr. Kinnaird was a sports legend in Palm Beach County and he loved baseball, and we're extremely proud to have his name permanently affixed to our press box."

After Buck retired from television, he found a way to stay close to baseball. He served as the scoreboard operator at Roger Dean Stadium for spring training and Florida State League games from the time the stadium opened in 1998, until his death in August 2008, at the age of 82.

Buck Kinnaird was inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
