Mobile BayBears News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - Wes Roemer tossed seven solid innings to keep the Tennessee Smokies from grabbing sole possession of first place in the North Division as the BayBears cruised to a 5-1 victory on Sunday night at Smokies Park.
Evan Frey started off the contest with a drag bunt single that put some early pressure on starting pitcher Andrew Cashner (2-4). Frey advanced to second on a sac bunt by Pedro Ciriaco and scored on a bloop single with two outs by Ricardo Sosa to put the BayBears (63-70, 26-37) on the board first for the first time in the series.
Roemer (9-8) worked around an error by Sosa in the bottom of the first as he sandwiched a pair of strikeouts between a liner to center. Roemer ended up with four punch outs in the contest while coughing up just six hits.
The BayBears opened their lead a bit in the fourth as Ciriaco doubled down the third base line to lead off against Cashner. A passed ball moved Ciriaco to third prior to Sosa getting hit by a pitch. Bryan Byrne hit a bouncer back to the mound that Cashner briefly kicked which allowed Ciriaco to score, though Byrne was thrown out at first.
Two batters later, Matt Tupman bounced a single to right which allowed Sosa to score. Tyler Colvin's toss to the plate was stopped by Welington Castillo, but he got slammed by Sosa, knocking the ball away. From there, Cyle Hankerd came home to put the visitors up by four.
It became a 5-0 contest in favor of the BayBears in the sixth as Byrne led off with a double and came home on another single by Tupman. It wasn't until the seventh when the Smokies (66-67, 34-29) finally touched the dish on a homer by Colvin, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
Roque Mercedes displaced Roemer in the eighth and hung a zero. Reid Mahon sought redemption for his blown save in the series opener and worked a scoreless ninth despite walking a pair.
The Mobile BayBears have sent 100 players to the major leagues. They'll play game four of their five-game set with the Smokies on Monday night at 6:15 central time with Matt Torra (8-13, 4.01) getting the start. The BayBears return to Mobile for their final homestand on Thursday, September 3 as they host the Montgomery Biscuits at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
