
M-Braves take series advantage with scrappy win Sunday

PEARL, MISS. (AUGUST 30, 2009) - The M-Braves (31-30) win game three over the Diamond Jaxx (34-29), 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Trustmark Park. The Braves take two a games to one series lead over West Tenn and even the season series at 12-12. Matt Young stole three bases in the game for the M-Braves, giving him a league leading 42 on the year. The 42 steals also sets a Braves team record. Brandon Hicks finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Jose Ortegano (5-2) picked up the win for the Braves, dealing six innings of one run baseball. The Jaxx are now 12-32 when facing left handed starters. For the D-Jaxx, Rich Poythress collected his second straight two hit game. The 2009 second round pick by the M's was 2-for-4 and raised his batting average to .277 in 19 games. Travis Garcia extended his hitting streak to seven games on Sunday by going 1-for-4 in the loss. Pending on the Smokies, BayBears game on Sunday night, the Jaxx currently sit ½ game behind the Smokies in the division.
The Jaxx scored first against Braves starter, Jose Ortegano in the top of the third. Callix Crabbe reached on an error by the short stop, Brandon Hicks, stole second base and then ended up at third on a balk. Crabbe scored on a fielders choice off of the bat of Ezequiel Carrera. The Jaxx took a 1-0 lead.
The M-Braves answered with a run in the bottom of the third as Brandon Hicks hit a ground rule double, scoring Travis Jones from second base. Dan Cortes retired three in a row to end the inning, as he got a dropped third strike with Ernesto Mejia at the plate and Matt Young was thrown out trying to score from third. The run by the Braves evened the score at 1-1.
Dan Cortes (1-4) surrendered a second run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jose Camerena drove in Willie Cabrera with a two-out double, putting the Braves on top 2-1. Cortes left the game after six innings of work, suffering the loss. Cortes gave up two runs on seven hits, while striking out seven and walking three.
The flood gates opened for the M-Braves in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Braves scored four runs. Matt Young walked against new Jaxx pitcher, Eric Hull and consequently stole second and third, then scored on an errant throw by Jaxx catcher, Flemming Baez. Willie Cabrera plated Brandon Hicks on a sacrifice fly and Concepcion Rodriguez scored on the play after a throwing error. The Braves knocked Jaxx reliever, Eric Hull from the game as Hull yielded four runs (three earned) and walked three in 2/3 of an inning. Greg Creek brought home the fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly off of the new Jaxx pitcher Joe Newby. With the four run seventh, Mississippi took a commanding 6-1 lead that turned into the final score.
West Tenn will once again attempt to even the series on Monday night at Trustmark Park, with the first pitch beginning at 7:05. RHP Steve Bray (7-6, 2.87) takes the mound for the D-Jaxx and RHP Ryne Reynosso (6-9, 3.57) deals for the M-Braves.
