Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - On Friday night at Chase Field in Phoenix, former BayBears catcher John Hester etched his name into the record books with one swing. In addition to becoming the 100th former BayBear to play in the major leagues, Hester blasted a home run in his first at-bat, becoming the 101st player in history to do so.
Hester, 25, was a leader behind the plate in 2008 for the BayBears while batting .268 with 11 home runs and 26 doubles. He continued to blossom in 2009 with Triple-A Reno as he reached a career-high 66 RBI while hitting .328. He cracked 31 doubles and swiped a career-high 13 bases for the Aces.
Hester, a 13th-round draft choice out of Stanford University in 2006, joins the likes of Jake Peavy, Jason Bay, Mark Reynolds and Justin Upton as former BayBears to hit the big show. In addition, nearly 10 former BayBears have touched the major league plateau in 2009 for the first time including Clay Zavada, Daniel Schlereth, Bryan Augenstein, Bobby Scales and Cesar Carrillo among others.
