Rodriguez Leads Roadrunners Past Thunder

EDINBURG, Texas - Ryde Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with three RBI leading the Edinburg Roadrunners past the McAllen Thunder 5-4 in 10 innings and snapping their three-game losing streak Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

With the game tied at four in the bottom of the 10th, Rodriguez hit a walk-off single to center field scoring pinch-hitter Dan Coury from second base.

It was the Thunder (14-23) who took the early lead in the top of the second on an RBI fielder's choice by Mauricio. Then they added another run in the top of the second after a fielding error allowed Jorge Bishop to score making it 2-0.

A fielding error in the top of the fifth allowed the Thunder to score another run to extend their lead but the Roadrunners (16-21) answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth after a Trevor Whyte RBI double that made it 3-1 McAllen.

Cody Bishop added to the Thunder lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI double that scored Jorge Bishop from first base making it 4-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rodriguez hit a two-run home run, his first of the season, cutting the lead down to one. Later in the inning, Tim Maitland reached on a bunt single and then stole second and moved to third on throwing error by the catcher. Bobby Rinard then drove in Maitland with an RBI single tying the game at four.

Rodriguez made Frank DeJiulio (3-3) the winner in the 10th with his walk-off hit. DeJiulio pitched five innings in relief and allowed just one run on four hits and two strike outs.

Gabriel Garcia (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs, three of which were earned, in four and two-third innings of work.

The Roadrunners and Thunder will play game two of their four-game series Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
