Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release

LUBBOCK, TX: June 6, 2003 – This release is a recap of the events that took place this week at the CHL Spring Conference in Phoenix that involved the Lubbock Cotton Kings.

Another Top Draw: In the CHL Expansion Draft for the Colorado Eagles and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, ‘Kings defenseman James Sheehan was the draft's first selection and his rights were obtained by Colorado. Sheehan becomes the second consecutive ‘King selected as the top pick in a CHL expansion draft after Lance Leslie was selected by Laredo last year. After Colorado selected Sheehan, the ‘Kings were allowed to re-protect one of their three remaining unprotected players and they re-protected Mike Dawson. No other players were selected from the Cotton Kings. Sheehan recorded a career high 32 points for Lubbock off of 6 goals and 26 assists. He led the ‘Kings in scoring by defenseman for the month of October (1g,4a) and co-led March (1g,6a).

And The Winner Is: Cotton Kings Assistant GM and Director of Ticket Operations Rod Evans was awarded as the CHL "Ticketing Director of the Year" at the CHL Spring Banquet for the second consecutive season. He was the only Cotton King award winner. The ‘Kings were finalists for "Best Game Operations" and Chris Due was a finalist for "Broadcaster of the Year."

Alignment Check: With the addition of Colorado and Rio Grande Valley and the El Paso Buzzards suspending operations, the CHL announced their conference and division alignment, which involves changes with Lubbock. The Cotton Kings will remain in the Southwest Division of the Southern Conference and will be joined by Amarillo, Odessa and San Angelo. New Mexico moves to the Northern Conference's Northwest Division. It is the first time the four teams have been in the same division in the CHL and the last time they were together was in the 00/01 season in the WPHL.
