Rocks sweep a pair in Salem

Salem, VA--- The Wilmington Blue Rocks swept a doubleheader from the Salem Avalanche at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium on Wednesday night. The Rocks won the opener, 1-0, and completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

In game one, Justin Sturge and Ryan Schroyer (1-0) combined a four-hit shutout win. Sturge made his first start of the season and tossed four innings of two-hit shutout baseball. He walked one and struck out one.

Schroyer went the final three innings and notched his first win of the season with the Blue Rocks. Schroyer worked out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning by striking out Francisco Caraballo for the final out.

The Rocks scored the only run on a run-scoring double in the second inning by Claudio Arias. Troy Patton (1-4) allowed one earned run on four hits over five innings and suffered the tough-luck loss.

In game two, the Rocks scored two in the first inning off of losing pitcher Josh Muecke (10-11) and went on for a 4-1 win. Dusty Brown, who had four hits over the two games, drove in a run with a single and Arias followed up with a sacrifice fly to give the Blue Rocks a 2-0 advantage.

Wilmington scored singles runs, both with two outs, in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-0 lead.

Salem finally broke through and scored a run against Jose Vaquedano (8-7) in the sixth inning. Mario Garza doubled to left centerfield and scored on a single by Mike Floyd. Vaquedano got the next hitter to hit into an inning-ending double play to avoid any further damage.

The 24-year-old allowed one earned run on six hits over six innings and notched his team-leading eighth win of the season.

Kyle Tabeek worked a perfect seventh inning to notch the save, his first with the Blue Rocks.

The Rocks and Avalanche continue their series on Thursday night, beginning at 6:05 p.m.. The two clubs will complete their suspended game from Tuesday night. The game will resume in the top of the third inning with Salem leading by a score of 2-1.

Andrew Dobies will oppose Mitch Talbot in the scheduled game following the completion of the suspended game.

Game Notes: The Rocks have swept three doubleheaders this season.

The shutout in game one was Wilmington's league-leading 11th of the season.

Dusty Brown collected four hits in the two games for the Blue Rocks.
