CarL1 Wilmington Blue Rocks

Blue Rocks resume game tonight

August 31, 2005 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Last night's game between the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Salem Avalanche was suspended in the third inning with Salem leading, 2-1. That game will be continued tomorrow night as a nine-inning game, followed by their regularly scheduled game, which will now be a seven-inning game.

Following Monday night's win, the Blue Rocks bid farewell to two players, Zach Borowiak and Brant Ust. Borowiak was promoted to Double- A Portland by the Boston Red Sox, becoming the 10th Blue Rock to climb the organizational ladder this season. Ust, who leads the Blue Rocks with 114 hits and 71 RBI, is leaving the club to play for Team USA in the IBAF World Cup, which starts this weekend in the Netherlands. Taking their places on the roster are infielders Ian Cronkhite and Luis Segovia.

The Blue Rocks are in the midst of their longest road trip of the season (eight days, nine games). Wilmington began the 2005 campaign with a scheduled eight-day, eight-game road trip through Myrtle Beach and Kinston, but their April 13 game in Kinston was rained out. Wilmington went 3-4 on that April trip, and sits at 1-3 on the current trip.

The Blue Rocks will finish the season with a below .500 record on the road for the fourth time in franchise history and for the first time since 2000, when they had a franchise-worst 28-42 mark on the road. The Rocks road record for 2005 is the worst in the league. GLAD THAT'S OVER: The Hillcats collected 11 hits in Monday night's win and have 10 or more hits in a game against Wilmington in 15 of 20 games this season. The Hillcats ended the season series hitting .309 as a team against Wilmington pitching, including 17 home runs.

Wilmington reliever Brett Rudrude worked an inning and a third on Saturday night and struck out three. Since allowing one earned run in his Wilmington debut on July 22, the righthander has not allowed another earned run, good for a streak of 14.2 innings. THE LONG BALL: The Blue Rocks have hit 95 home runs over their first 131 games of the season. It marks only the third time in franchise history that the club has hit more than 90 home runs in a season. Wilmington hit a franchise record 107 home runs in 1997. On the other hand, the Blue Rocks pitching staff has allowed a league-high and franchise-record 125 home runs this season, including 77 on the road.

The Blue Rocks used their 128th different lineup of the season in last night's loss. The Rocks have only used the same lineup three times this season. After tonight, the Blue Rocks will have eight games left in the regular season. Following their series with Salem, the Rocks close out the regular season with a four-game series over three days against Frederick, beginning on Saturday.
