Rockies Clip Voyagers to Secure Series

Grand Junction, CO - The Voyagers hit back-to-back home runs in a three-run 7th but their comeback bid fell short in a 7-6 loss to the Rockies Monday night at Suplizio Field.

Great Falls (21-16) lost its third consecutive game and dropped to 6-12 on the road this season. The Voyagers fell to 4-10 in one-run games. Grand Junction (20-17) has now won six straight, and is riding an eight-game home winning streak. The Rockies have won four of six in the season series and go for the series sweep Tuesday night.

Grand Junction started the scoring with a two-run bottom of the 2nd. Will Golsan walked to lead off the frame, and John Cresto immediately followed with a two-run home run deep to right-center for his first of the season.

The Voyagers promptly tied the game with a two-spot in the 2nd. Romy Gonzalez led off with a single to left-center. After a groundout, Gonzalez stole third and then scored on a Micah Coffey RBI single to left. Coffey moved to second on a base hit to right by Maiker Feliz. Gunnar Troutwine leveled the game with an RBI single lined into right-center.

The Rockies sent nine batters to the plate in the home half of the 2nd and scored four times to take command. With one out, Zach Hall tripled to the wall in deep left and scored the go-ahead run when the errant throw to third rolled all the way to the backstop. Will Golsan then singled with two outs and John Cresto whacked his second homer of the night to deep left for a 5-2 lead. Coco Montes had the second triple of the inning, and later scored on a base hit to center by Daniel Montano.

Down 7-2, Great Falls scored one in the 6th and three in the 7th to draw closer. Romy Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to begin the 6th. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. An RBI groundout by Micah Coffey made it 7-3. In the 7th, Travis Moniot led off with a base hit to center. Logan Sowers then launched a two-run home run deep to right-center for his sixth of the season. Gonzalez made it back-to-back dingers with a solo shot lined over the wall in left for the game's final run. It was Gonzalez's third homer of the season.

Grand Junction outhit Great Falls 14-to-11. For the Rockies, John Cresto went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Daniel Montano had a three-hit night with two RBIs. Gunnar Troutwine collected three hits and one RBI for the Voyagers. Romy Gonzalez posted two hits with three runs. Amado Nunez finished 2-for-5 with a double. The two teams have combined to hit 13 home runs in the series (three games) so far.

Jacob Bird picked up the win in relief. Bird (3-0) pitched two innings and gave up one earned run on one hit with three strikeouts. Chris Comito took the loss. Comito (3-4) lasted five and allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Alexander Martinez earned his league-best ninth save with two strikeouts and one hit in the 9th.

Great Falls closes out its seven-game road trip and the first-half schedule with game four at Grand Junction Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40. The Voyagers return home July 26th to face Helena in a four-game series at Centene Stadium that marks the start of the second-half.
