Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - Yesterday, the Rockies announced they have signed catcher Matt Pagnozzi to a minor league contract.
Pagnozzi, 28, appeared in 68 games as a Memphis Redbird in 2010 with 20 runs, one home run and 21 RBI while suiting up as a Cardinal for an overall 21 games with five runs, one homer and 10 RBI. A major concern for some was the fact that he has struggled offensively throughout the years, but the right-hander seems determined and unfazed.
"You know, playing defensively is kind of my strong suit; obviously I'm going to work on that to maintain it and improve if I can, while offensively there's always a lot of work and I'm always looking for new ways to improve. You can't just focus on one side of it, you want the complete package. You want to be the best player you can be and I always want to have a better year than the previous."
About a month ago when the Cardinals placed the Arizona native on waivers, he still voiced an optimistic outlook on things.
"Right now what I'm looking at is some opportunity elsewhere, I'm looking to see what kind of opportunity the other clubs can provide. The baseball will take care of itself, you know, it's all the other things that need to fall into place."
Pagnozzi found the opportunity he has been looking for and things have certainly fallen into place for him. The career catcher has been a part of the Cardinals farm system since 2003, but the Pagnozzi name has been a significant part of the organization for over 20 years because of his uncle, Tom Pagnozzi, a legendary catcher from 1987-1998.
Making Moves
The Cardinals have made several adjustments to their 40-man roster in the last two weeks preparing for the Rule 5 Draft. While Blake King (RHP), Adron Chambers (OF), Tony Cruz (C), Pete Kozma (IF), David Kopp (RHP), Adam Reifer (RHP) and Eduardo Sanchez (RHP) were all added, St. Louis has outrighted Steven Hill (C), Adam Ottavino (RHP), Daryl Jones (OF) and Nick Stavinoha (OF).
The Cardinals have also signed Jake Westbrook (RHP) to a two-year deal with a mutual option for 2013 and former Met Raul Valdes (LHP) to a minor league contract.
