Midland RockHounds News Release

Thank You, Jack Norworth & Albert Von Tilzer

The two gentlemen mentioned in our headline (above) wrote "Take Me Out To The Ballgame," the song which accompanies the traditional "Seventh Inning Stretch." Before the "stretch" Wednesday night, the RockHounds held a narrow, 3-1, lead. After? The 'Hounds scored six unanswered runs, turning a close call into a runaway win by the final score of 9-1.

Eight RockHounds batters scored a run, drove in a run, or both, with Jake Goebbert and Conner Crumbliss leading the way. Goebbert drove in the game's first run with an RBI double in the first inning and ripped an RBI triple in the last of the seventh, bringing his season total to a team-high 44 RBI. Crumbliss went 3-for-5, scoring the game's first and last runs.

David Freitas went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and scored a run. His two-bagger was, perhaps, the game's biggest hit. With Dusty Coleman at first base with two out in the sixth (and the RockHounds leading, 2-1), Freitas sent a line drive down the left field line. San Antonio third baseman Jake Blackwood deflected the ball, which bounced off the front of the stands diagonally into left field. RockHounds manager Aaron Nieckula waived Coleman home, with Dusty narrowly beating the throw to the plate for a 3-1 lead.

The Missions threatened in the seventh, putting the tying runs on base, but Carlos Fisher struck out Rico Noel to end the inning. Moments later came the singing of "Take Me Out ... " and, with a tip of the cap to Messers Norworth and Von Tilzer, the 'Hounds broke the game open.

Bonus Fact: Neither Jack Norworth nor Albert Von Tilzer had ever been to a baseball game when they wrote "Take Me Out To The Ballgame." It would be 32 and 20 years, respectively, before either would see his first game.

Kibbles & Bits

- Carlos Hernandez went six strong innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk, striking out five. The win was also his 28th as a member of the RockHounds (2009-2013), tying him for third all-time in franchise history. He joins three pitchers from the Midland Cubs era: Jon Perlman (1979-82) had 31 wins ... Dan Corder (1973-73) had 30 ... and Carlos ties Herman Segelke (1978-80) with 28.

- Anthony Aliotti saw a seven-game hit streak come to an end, going 0-for-4 (with a walk and an RBI), but remains the league's leading hitter with a .363 average, leading all other Texas League batters by at least 31 points.

- Since joining the RockHounds from (Triple-A) Sacramento, Conner Crumbliss has reached base in 22-of-24 games.

- Thursday's pitching match-up will be one of the best in Double-A baseball, featuring two of the Texas League's top 10 pitchers: San Antonio's Matt Andriese (7-1, 2.02) and the 'Hounds' Murphy Smith (5-7, 2.64). Both have been selected for the Texas League All-Star Game.

- Four RockHounds were named to the South Division Team for the 2013 Texas League All-Star Game, led by Anthony Aliotti. The 'Hounds' first baseman will be joined in the South starting line-up by shortstop Dusty Coleman, with (outfielder) Jake Goebbert and (pitcher) Murphy Smith also named to the South squad as reserves. The annual All-Star Game will be played June 25 in Springdale, Arkansas.

- The RockHounds continue one of the season's best home stands at Citibank Ballpark, hosting the San Antonio Missions through Saturday. Next up is "Thirsty Thursday" (the 13th) ... followed by Kids' Jersey Night (Friday) and A.J. Griffin Bobblehead Doll Night (Saturday).
