Rockford Rally Falls Short, 8-7

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Traverse City closer Tyler Meigs stunted a pair of Rockford rallies and earned the save on Wednesday as the Beach Bums beat the RiverHawks, 8-7.
The RiverHawks nearly clawed their way back from a five-run deficit, but failed to take advantage of Kalamazoo's 8-1 loss to visiting River City. Rockford remained 1½ games behind the wild card-leading Kings. The RiverHawks head to Kalamazoo for a doubleheader at 4:35 p.m. Thursday. They must take five of seven in the season-ending series to make the playoffs.
On Wednesday, Traverse City scored four times in the third inning to wipe out Rockford's early 2-0 lead. Curt Ledbetter doubled in the tying runs and extended his hitting streak to 24 games. Kyle Bradburry doubled in the go-ahead run and Aaron Garza singled in a run to knock Rockford starter Dave Dowling (6-6) from the mound.
The Beach Bums added two runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and got a leadoff home run from Brad Vericker in the sixth.
Rockford got back into the game with a three-run sixth inning. Traverse City starter Ryan Gehring (7-8) left after he gave up three singles and hit Roberto Valiente with the bases loaded and nobody out to force in a run. Joey Huskins followed with a sacrifice fly and Jono Brooks singled in a run.
Matt Hagen triple in a run in the seventh.
Meigs entered with the tying runs on the corners and two outs in the eighth. He got out of the eighth with a strikeout, but hit a batter and walked two to load the bases with nobody out. Brandon Cohen drove in a run on a groundout and advanced the tying and go-ahead runs to scoring position with two outs. Meigs struck out Huskins to end the game. Meigs picked up his 11th save.
