Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill. - The Rockford IceHogs (6-8-1-0) used three power play goals to defeat the Iowa Wild (5-9-0-1) by a 3-1 final score at Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday. Rockford scored on each of their first three man-advantages chances to erase an early one goal deficit.

After trading power play goals in the first, it was Tanner Kero who notched the eventual game-winning strike to start the second period. At 2:40 of the middle frame. Kero took a feed from Spencer Abbott on the right side circle and flicked a wrister past Steve Michalek to give Rockford the lead.

Sam Carrick then added a third power play strike, and netted his first goal as an IceHog, with 1:21 to go in the period. With a delayed penalty on the way againt Iowa, Carrick drove to the net, pulled the puck to his backhand, and deposited a shot inside the left post. Rockford took the 3-1 advantage into the third period.

Teemu Pulkkinen started the scoring with a power play goal, just as he did for the Wild in the prior meeting between the two teams, as Iowa also capitalized on their first power play of the game. Pulkkinen took a pass at the left circle, settled the puck, and blasted a slap shot past Lars Johansson at 3:28 of the frame.

Rockford responded with a power play goal of their own. With their first man advantage agaist Iowa this season, Erik Gustafsson was able to free the puck in the left corner. Spencer Abbott and Tanner Kero combined to dig it out to Ville Pokka on the right point. Pokka walked down the wing and picked the top right corner to net his first of the year at 11:12 of the first, forcing the game into a 1-1 tie at the end of 20 minutes of play.

Iowa had a few chances to get back into the game in the third period, including pulling their goaltender for an extra skater with over two minutes left in the game. A pair of penalties to the IceHogs late in the game gave the Wild a 6-on-4 opportunity that eventually turned into a 6-on-3 chance for six seconds, but Johansson slammed the door late to perserve the win.

Rockford finished the game 3-for-6 on the power play while the Wild ended the game at 1-for-5.
