Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill.- Rockford IceHogs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Steve Martinson announced Tuesday that the United Hockey League club has signed rookie forward Chaz Johnson for the 2005-06 season. Sticking with club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Johnson is the fourth rookie to sign on with the IceHogs for the 05-06 season. The winger joins Robin Big Snake, Ryan Carrigan and Matt Gens as first year skaters on the Hogs roster. Johnson has some professional hockey tradition in his family, as he follows in his father Brian's footsteps into the pro ranks.

"Like his dad, Chaz is a physical player who fits into our mold of a guy who has skills and is not very fun to play against," said Martinson. "He is a power forward who loves to hit and can skate. We are getting another guy who combines toughness and skill, and exemplifies Rockford's prototypical player."

His game is patterned after his father who was a tough guy while skating in five professional seasons, accumulating over 1,100 penalty minutes. Chaz skated last season with the Drummondville Voltiguers (QMJHL) and turned in 16g-17a-33pts and 157 PIM's in 62 contests. His 157 PIM's were third most on the Voltiguers, while Johnson's point totals were all career highs.

In four seasons in the QMJHL, Johnson registered 42g-50a and 543 PIM's in 220 games. The 6'-1", 215lb winger spent two-and-a-half of his four junior seasons with the Val d'Or Foreurs, before completing his junior career in Drummondville last season.

With Johnson and the three other rookies locked up for the 05-06 season, Rockford has 16 skaters under contract. Others on the roster include forwards Alex Kim, Vince Malts, Preston Mizzi, Jason Notermann, Olivier Proulx, Jason Ralph, Bruce Watson and Chad Woollard, defenseman Corey Hessler and Nathan Lutz, and goaltender Ronnie Vogel.
