Rockets Defeat T-Birds

Kelowna, BC, October 29, 2008 - The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-3 Wednesday night at Prospera Place.

Stepan Novotny scored at 6:35 of the first period to give the Rockets a 1-0 lead. Brandon McMillan and Cody Almond had the assists.

Kelowna took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Dylan Hood at 16:30 of the first. Evan Bloodoff and Kyle Verdino had assists on the goal. Seattle outshot Kelowna 7-6 in the first period.

Seattle cut the Kelowna lead to one goal when Greg Scott scored 43 seconds into the second period. Stefan Warg and Lindsay Nielsen had the assists on the first Seattle goal.

The T-Birds tied the game 2-2 at 4:13 of the second in a four-on-four situation. Prab Rai had the puck at the Seattle blue line. Rai passed to Thomas Hickey in the Seattle zone who carried the puck up the ice with Jim O'Brien on his left. Inside the Kelowna blue line Hickey passed the puck to O'Brien. O'Brien cut to the slot and put a slap shot on goal. O'Brien followed his shot and knocked the rebound up and over Kelowna goalie Kris Lazaruk.

After Seattle's second goal Adam Brown replaced Lazaruk in the Kelowna net. Lazaruk made nine saves on 11 shots.

Colin Long scored a power-play goal at 8:11 of the second to put the Rockets in front 3-2. Jamie Benn and Cody Almond assisted on the goal.

Lucas Bloodoff got the Rockets back to a two-goal lead at 16:21 of the second. Benn and Long has the assists.

The Rockets outshot the T-Birds 13-7 in the second period and led 19-14 in total shots after two periods.

Lucas Bloodoff scored a power-play goal 50 seconds into the third period to put the Rockets in front 5-2. Benn and Long assisted on the goal.

Rai scored a power-play goal at 4:03 of the third period to get the T-Birds third goal of the night. Stefan Warg sent the puck from the left point to Hickey just inside the blue line at center ice. Hickey put a slap shot on goal that Rai tipped past Brown for his 10th goal of the season.

Benn scored at 12:16 of the third and Evan Bloodoff scored at 13:24 of the third to put the Rockets in front 7-3.

Seattle outshot Kelowna 13-9 in the third period but the Rockets finished with a 28-27 advantage in total shots.

Brown stopped 15 of 16 shots to get the win and his record is now 5-0-0-0.

Seattle goalie Jacob DeSerres made 21 saves on 28 shots and his record is now 2-4-0-0.

The T-Birds next game is Saturday, November 1, in Kennewick against the Tri-City Americans at 7 p.m. There next home game is Tuesday, November 4, against the Edmonton Oil Kings at 7:05 p.m. at KeyArena.
