Rocket Trade Cousineau To Sea Dogs

December 30, 2009 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
P.E.I. Rocket News Release

The PEI Rocket announced another major move today by sending Marco Cousineau and a 5th Round Draft Pick (originally obtained from Baie-Comeau) to the Saint John Sea Dogs. In return, the Rocket will receive 2nd, 4th, and 7th round draft picks in 2010 and Saint John's 3rd round draft pick in 2011. The 2nd round pick in the 2010 draft is a pick that the Sea Dogs acquired from Baie-Comeau and is expected to be an early 2nd round pick while the 4th round pick is a selection the Sea Dogs acquired from Lewiston and should be early in the 4th round.

In a statement provided to all media and fans, President & Governor, Serge Savard Jr provided the following comments.

"The play of Evan Mosher this year has given us some tremendous flexibility to be able to trade Marco and acquire significant draft picks for this year and next. Evan has played extremely well and has earned the number one position and we want to give him the opportunity to carry this team forward for the remainder of this year.

It is always a difficult decision to trade any player, but our trades this year were something that we felt strongly about to ensure the long term success of our franchise. We have a very competitive team right now and we feel this will continue even with the changes we have made. The addition of veteran players like Jonathan Bonneau and Michael Stinziani will fill the void left by players like Champagne and Doyle, and will give us the opportunity to be very competitive leading to this year's playoffs.

We felt it was the perfect time to load up on draft picks and prospects for the future. This will give us a significant number of early draft picks this coming year. We have some tremendous prospects in the system now including our current roster players along with drafted prospects such as Kevin Boyer, Felipé Corbo, and Michael Ortika to name just a few. These players have given us the confidence that we have a very strong and exciting future for this franchise.

Other teams in the Q, both in our division and outside our division as well, have very solid teams and have acquired players for a run at the Championship this year and we felt this was a more appropriate action for our team at the present time.

We have an exciting future for our team and we didn't want to mortgage everything for one opportunity this year that might or might not pay off. The truth is that the price tag to acquire high end players was much too great for us to trade away our current prospects.

We recently went through a strategic planning process where we created a 3 year plan to develop our team based on our current prospects and matching this with future draft picks. Our division is maybe the most competitive division in Junior Hockey this year and we felt that we needed to gain some significant strength for the future. This is a very exciting day for the future of our franchise. We have never had this many prospects and draft picks for the future."
