Torrington Titans News Release
The Brockton Rox outpitched, outhit and outexecuted the Torrington Titans on Saturday night and came away with a 7-2 victory to show for it.
Daniel Roche pitched six strong innings to pick up the win while Lorenzo Papa and Stephan Halibej both hit home runs for the Rox, who banged out 15 hits and played solid defense, turning three double plays.
Making his first start of the season, Roche (NJIT) allowed two hits with three strikeouts and three walks in six innings. The Rox turned double plays behind Roche (3-0) in the first, second and fifth innings as the Titans were never able to mount much of an offensive threat early on.
Titans starter Jason Byers (0-1) deserved a bit better fate but was saddled with the loss. The Titans committed two errors behind him and had at least as many mental errors in the field that didn't show up in the scorebook other than the fact that they led to runs for the Rox.
Byers lasted five innings and allowed five runs (three earned) and eight hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Brockton put up three runs in the first against Byers, two coming on an infield hit by Kyle Silva with two outs that just eluded Byers and didn't go more than 70 feet from home plate.
Brockton added two more runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Torrington committed two errors in the inning and the only Brockton hit in the frame came on an infield single.
The Rox broke it open in the sixth when Papa and Halibej connected for back-to-back home runs off of Titans reliever Tom Quicker to make it 7-0. Papa hit a laser over the fence in left center and Halibej followed with a no-doubter that easily cleared the fence in left field.
Torrington's only runs of the game came in the seventh inning when Bob Seda singled to left and came home on a two-run shot by first baseman Stephen Eldridge.
Torrington had won Friday night's matchup between the teams in Brockton 10-2 but coud not build on the win and dropped to 11-17 on the season. The Rox are 8-2 in their last 10 games and improved to 15-13 and are in third place in the FCBL.
