Staten Island Yankees News Release

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (June 15, 2011) - Baseball and high-tech surgery play ball June 20 at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark. That's when the Staten Island Yankees take on the Brooklyn Cyclones in a 7 p.m. game and Staten Island University Hospital rolls out its da Vinci surgical robot for the public.

Short of being in an OR, it's the closest that Staten Islanders can get to experiencing the robot's state-of-the-art capabilities. Attendees at the ballpark can maneuver the robot's arms - just like surgeons at SIUH do when performing minimally invasive surgeries - as they test their dexterity. Kids ages 6 to 14 can try their luck controlling the robotic arms in timed games of skill to win an autographed SI Yankees' bat and T-shirt.

SIUH was one of the first hospitals in the city to use the robot for hysterectomies, kidney and prostate surgeries, as well as other procedures. Last year, more than 100 robotic surgeries were performed at SIUH.

Da Vinci surgery involves two main components: a free-standing robot with four spider-like arms, and a separate console station where the surgeon sits. Tiny incisions are made to allow the surgeon to maneuver robot's arms during surgery. One arm is a camera and the others hold surgical equipment.

Sitting at the console, a surgeon views a 3D image from the camera inside the patient and manipulates the robot's every movement during surgery. The robotic arms become an extension of the surgeon's own hands with the added benefit of a 360-degree range of motion not possible by the human hand alone.

The da Vinci robot enables surgeons to do surgical procedures with smaller incisions, resulting in less bleeding and pain for the patient, shorter recovery times and fewer post-operative complications.
