February 19, 2004 - NBA G League (G League)
Roanoke Dazzle News Release
NBA Legend and former Virginia Squires George "Iceman" Gervin will be coming to Roanoke on Friday, February 27, to help the Roanoke Dazzle and the Shenandoah Life Insurance Company celebrate Black History Month. The "Iceman" will attend the National Basketball Developmental League game where the Dazzle will host the Huntsville Flight. His presence highlights "Retro Weekend."
George Gervin is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and was voted one of the top 50 players of all time at the NBA's 50th anniversary in 2003. He played for the ABA (American Basketball Association) Virginia Squires from 1972-74 and for ABA San Antonio (1974-76). He then spent nine years with the NBA San Antonio Spurs and two more years with the Chicago Bulls. He was part of the all-ABA Rookie Team in 1973 and is a twelve-time All-Star (ABA/NBA combined). He was the MVP of the 1980 All-Star game. He was a prolific scorer and his trademark "finger roll" helped him to maintain a career scoring average of over 26 points per game. The "Iceman" is one of only three players to win four or more NBA scoring titles (the two other players were Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain).
The "Iceman" spent a memorable two years in Virginia as a member of the Squires. He left for the ABA Spurs under a federal court order. In his last game in Virginia, February 1, 1974, in front of 2,000 screaming fans at Hampton Roads Coliseum, Gervin hit an incredible game-winning shot against the Kentucky Colonels. Six days later, he played for San Antonio. Dazzle fans are glad he's back in the Commonwealth at last!
Concessions will be sold at a special "retro rate": popcorn 50 cents, one dollar hot dogs and soda. A post-game Dazzle player autograph and photo session will be open to fans. Come dressed in your best "retro" wear and enter our half time contest to win a VIP meet and greet with the "Iceman." Disco Dress also gets you Double the Dazzle. Everyone coming to the game in 70's Disco attire will receive a free ticket to come back Saturday. Free stuff will include tie dyed Dazzle T-Shirts.
