Roadrunners Score Late, Defeat Colts

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners scored three runs in the ninth inning to get past the San Angelo Colts 8-5 Tuesday night at Foster Field.

With the game tied at five in the ninth inning, the Roadrunners (36-36) scored three runs off of Colts closer Cephas Howard.

The Colts (36-35) jumped out to the early lead with an RBI double from Joseph Hicks in the bottom of the first inning. Miguel Alfonso then followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that allowed Jon Dziomba to score making it 2-0.

Derrick Pyles got the Roadrunners on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single. Then, Dan Coury followed with a three-run home run off of B.J. Hyatt. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Tim Battle drove in a run after being hit by a pitch giving Edinburg the 5-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Dziomba hit an RBI triple that allowed Steve Rinaudo to score. Dziomba then came into score after an RBI ground out by Hicks cutting the Roadrunners lead 5-4.

Alfonso tied the game at five for the Colts with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh knocking Edinburg starter Curtis Camilli out of the game.

Edinburg snapped the tie in the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded, Pyles hit an RBI single that scored Tim Maitland from third. Carlton Salters added to the lead with a two-run single that allowed Travis Clark and Trevor Whyte to score pushing their lead to 8-5.

Alex Schmarzo came on in the bottom of the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning giving Edinburg the 8-5 victory. Schmarzo earned his sixth save of the season.

Howard (4-3) took the loss after allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning while scattering three hits.

Cullen Babin (5-1) picked up the win after pitching an inning and two-thirds of relief for Camilli, who took the no-decision. Babin allowed just two hits.

The Roadrunners open a four-game home stand against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings on Wednesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
