Fort Worth Cats News Release
For the third time in four nights, the Fort Worth Cats shutout the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings at LaGrave Field thanks to fifteen strikouts in a 5-0 victory.
Fort Worth starter James Giulietti (4-3) had to get out of trouble early as the bases were loaded without any outs. The lefthander recorded his first of nine strikeouts for the first out, followed by an inning-ending double play.
Rio Grande Valley (33-39) only recorded two hits the rest of the game as inning after inning they were held in check by fantastic Fort Worth pitching.
Giulietti went six innings and only walked one batter in his best start of the season. Relievers Jeff Sakowski, Matt Eschleman, and Trevor Longfellow totaled six strikeouts without any of them giving up even one hit. It was the third shutout in four games for the Cats, as all three wins this series resulted in a 5-0 victory.
The first hit tallied by the Cats came on a solo home run by left fielder Cameron Monger in the 3rd inning. He later was granted one more RBI on a sacrifice fly to add an insurance run.
Cats' first baseman David Bergin hit a towering shot on the first pitch in the bottom of the fifth for his 16th home run of the season to put his squad ahead 2-0. Bergin not only leads the league in blasts, but also in RBI with 57.
WhiteWings' starting pitcher AJ Smouse (4-7) pitched well but was still given the loss due to lack of run support. Smouse went six innings and surrendered two runs.
The Fort Worth Cats now need only one win to end the regular season in first place in the United League. The remaining eight games are all against the San Angelo Colts, with the last four of the series at LaGrave Field.
