Roadrunners Pounce Early to Beat WhiteWings

EDINBURG - The Edinburg Roadrunners jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings en route to a 9-6 victory over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Cody McMorris led off the bottom of the first with a walk against WhiteWings (2-1) starter Chase Davenport (0-1), stole second, moved to third on a groundout and stole home to give the Roadrunners (1-2) a 1-0 lead.

WhiteWings shortstop Edgar Trejo committed three errors as the Roadrunners batted around in the bottom of the second while scoring five runs (one earned), capped by a three-run triple by Brandon Wilkerson to make it 6-0.

The WhiteWings scratched across a pair of unearned runs against Aaron Guerra (1-0) in the top of the third. With Carl Johnson at first and two outs, Jonathan Fernandez hit a line drive to left field that got by C.J. Beatty, scoring Johnson and allowing Fernandez to go to third. One batter later, Leivi Ventura hit a grounder to second that Jason Thomas couldn't handle, allowing Fernandez to score to make it 6-2.

Welington Dotel hit his first home run of the season in the top of the fourth to bring the WhiteWings within 6-3.

After the WhiteWings added another run in the top of the fifth, Jason Thomas hit a three-run home to put the Roadrunners up 9-4.

The WhiteWings added a pair of unearned runs against Guerra in the sixth, but that was it against Guerra, who struck out seven in eight innings before Julio Castro pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The WhiteWings and Roadrunners complete this four-games series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Alexander Concepcion (0-0, 0.00) is expected to face right-hander Jorge Quintero (0-0, 0.00).
