Roadrunners Outslugged by Prairie Dogs

ABILENE, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners lost a back-and-forth ball game against the Abilene Prairie Dogs Thursday night at Walt Driggers Field with a final score of 9-8.

After taking the lead in the top of the ninth, Abilene (25-39) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off two-run double by Kyle Nichols.

The Roadrunners (40-26) grabbed the first lead of the night in the top of the second. Derek Perren started the inning with a single and then moved to second on a ground ball. Osiel Flores then hit an RBI single that allowed Perren to score for the 1-0 lead.

Abilene quickly answered back in the bottom of the second against Miguel Martinez, who got the no-decision, as Wilson Batista hit a two-run homerun giving the Prairie Dogs the 2-1 edge.

Perren tied things with an RBI single that allowed Vincent Blue to score in the top of the third. Felix Molina then followed with a two-run double that allowed Carlos Hereaud and Perren to score for the 4-2 lead.

After adding two runs in the bottom of the third, Abilene added yet another run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Jason Martin that scored Danny Gonzalez for the 5-4 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Cristobal Santana tied things at five with an RBI single but the Prairie Dogs got two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run single from Gonzalez that made it 7-5 in favor of Abilene.

Edinburg fought back in the top of the sixth. Vincent Blue drove in Tim Battle from third with an RBI ground out. Wilmer Pino then hit an RBI single that scored Stantrel Smith tying the game at seven.

In the top of the ninth, Pino and Hereaud started the inning with hits that put runners on second and third. One out later, Molina delivered the RBI single giving Edinburg the 8-7 lead.

Kyle Nichols gave the Prairie Dogs the 9-7 walk-off win with a two-run double off of Paul Koss (3-2) that allowed Joe Weik and Geraldo Valentin to score.

The Roadrunners begin a two-game series with the San Angelo Colts Friday night at Foster Field with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
