Roadrunners Fall to Prairie Dogs

EDINBURG, Texas--- The Edinburg Roadrunners recorded six hits against the Abilene Prairie Dogs as they dropped the third game of the series 4-0 Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Brian Smith (1-0) held the Roadrunners off the scoreboard with seven shutout innings while scattering five with five strikeouts for his first win of the season.

Jason Martin started the ball game for the Prairie Dogs (2-1) with a single to center and then moved to second on Wilson Batista's single. Kyle Nichols then followed with an RBI double to the left field corner that allowed Martin to score from second. With runners at second and third, Nick Ochoa hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Batista to make it 2-0 Abilene.

Kirk Wetmore (0-1) kept the Roadrunners (1-2) in the ball game as he pitched five and a third innings and allowed just two runs on six hits.

The score remained the same until the top of the eighth when the Prairie Dogs added some insurance runs. Joe Weik led off the inning with a single then moved to third on a base hit by Jessie Mier. After a walk to Eddie Brown that loaded the bases, a wild pitch allowed Weik to come in and score. One out later, Reggie Williams hit an RBI single to right field that scored Meir from third extending Abilene's lead 4-0.

Scott Vander Weg pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for his first save of the season giving the Prairie Dogs the 4-0 victory.

The Roadrunners and Prairie Dogs will wrap up their four-game series Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Matison Smith is expected to face Ben Tootle with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
