San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- The San Angelo Colts exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to defeat the McAllen Thunder 10-4 Friday night at Foster Field.
Catcher Josh Banda and shortstop Landon Camp both hit two-run homers in the sixth, and centerfielder Ronnie Gaines delivered an RBI double. It was Banda's first home run and Camp's second of the young season.
For the second night in a row, McAllen scored first. Designated hitter Luis Blanco led off the fourth with a home run and four batters later catcher Gio Rosa had a sacrifice fly that scored first baseman Brian Nichols.
McAllen clung to a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but that is when the Colts offense came alive.
After a strong, five-inning outing by starter Frank James, the Thunder bullpen crumbled. Reliever Rex Garner (0-1) allowed all six sixth inning runs on five hits, and suffered the loss.
On the other side, Colts' starter Mark Willinsky struck out five and allowed just three runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. He took a no decision.
Reliever David Phillips (1-0) earned the win. He finished the sixth inning, pitched a 1-2-3 seventh and struck out three in the process. Phillips now has seven strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings this season.
The Colts and Thunder play the series finale Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Foster Field. Lefty Ryan Riddle will start for the Colts opposite Thunder righthander Quinn Bright. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Colts Magnetic Schedule, courtesy of Double Dave's Pizzaworks. Gates open at 6:05 p.m.
The San Angelo Colts are a member of United League Baseball who are in their 13th season. Tickets are on sale now, and available at the Colts' front office at Foster Field.
