
Roadrunners Drop Opening Game To Thunder

ROBSTOWN, TEXAS ---- The Edinburg Roadrunners lost 6-4 in the opening game of a four-game series against the Coastal Bend Thunder Sunday night at Fairgrounds Field.
The Roadrunners got on the board against Thunder starter Alejandro Martinez (2-2) in the top of the first inning. With runners at first and second, Wilmer Pino attempted to steal third but the throw from Coastal Bend's catcher Manny Mejia sailed into left field which allowed Pino to score giving the Roadrunners the early 1-0 lead.
The Thunder responded in the bottom of the first with four runs on three hits against Edinburg starter Eric Montoya (5-2). Alex Fernandez hit an RBI double that scored Chris Lewis from first for the first run of the inning. Fernandez came into score on an RBI single by Manny Mejia who then moved to second after Carlos Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch that allowed Mejia and Rodriguez to move up an extra base, Bryan Vickers hit a sacrifice fly that scored Mejia from third. Amadeo Zazueta ended the scoring in the inning with an RBI single that drove in Rodriguez giving Coastal Bend the 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third the Thunder extended their lead on an RBI single by Fernandez that drove in Alfred Joseph making it a 5-1 game.
Bryon Smith got the Roadrunners another run in the top of the third inning with an RBI single to left field that allowed Robert Matlock to touch home plate making the score 5-2.
Edinburg (36-29) cut the lead down to two runs in the top of the fourth inning on Matlock's sacrifice fly that allowed Nick Aranda to score making it a 5-3 game.
The Thunder (29-35) answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Lewis that allowed Joseph to score extending their lead to 6-3.
Another sacrifice fly by Matlock allowed Aranda to score in the top of the sixth inning bringing the Roadrunners within two runs with a score of 6-4.
The Coastal Bend bullpen combined to allow one run in four innings of relief for Martinez. Benny Cepeda pitched a scoreless ninth for his eighth save of the season ending the game with a final score of 6-4.
The Roadrunners and Thunder will play game two of this four-game series Monday night at Fairgrounds Field with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Pedro Flores (4-3) is expected to start game two for Edinburg.
