Dillas Miscue Gives Colts Game 1

San Angelo, Texas--- In a matchup of the two top teams in the United League, the Colts (42-23) took out the Dillas 5-4 in the first of a four game set between the squads. After Amarillo (36-28) fought resiliently, to tie the game in the ninth, San Angelo won due to a miscue from third baseman Andrew Wong.

San Angelo peppered Dillas starter Justin Phillips for a run in the first inning, and two runs in the second. Ronnie Gaines and Hunter Jobes collected singles in the first frame, a wild pitch was sent to the backstop delivering Gaines to home plate. In the second inning, the Colts worked two free passes and two singles to add two runs.

Dillas chipped away at San Angelo's three-run lead in the third inning. Stantrel Smith tripled, Andrew Wong then sent a ground ball to the right side, the first Amarillo run of the game was plated. San Angelo maintained a 3-1 lead.

The Colts lead dwindled again the fourth. Eric Brown sent a sacrifice fly to center field as Terrence McClain tagged and scored. San Angelo's lead stood at just a run.

The Dillas stood at all bases in the top of the fifth inning. With two away, Angel Reyes ripped a line drive to left-center, center fielder Hunter Jobes was at full speed when he dove and robbed Reyes of extra-bases. The defensive gem left three runners on and maintained the Colts one-run advantage.

A two-out solo blast in the sixth inning off the bat of Gaines (9) gave the Colts a two run cushion. After the completion of six innings, San Angelo led 4-2.

The Dillas snuck another run across in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to one run. In the ninth, Jameson Maj retired the first two batters on routine ground outs to first base. But a walk to Eric Brown, then a stolen base, allowed the tying run to reach second. A clutch RBI single by Justin Wenger knotted the game at four.

San Angelo was then offered two free passes in the bottom of the ninth, new addition Selwyn Langaigne represented the winning run at second base. Josh Collazo sent a dribbler with top spin to third base, Andrew Wong had the ball kick off the heel of his glove, the ball scattered into the outfield, Langaigne rounded third base and came into score the winning run. The 5-4 victory in favor of San Angelo handed the Colts game one of the four game series.

The winning pitcher of record was Jameson Maj(2-2). The right-hander went 1.1 innings allowing a hit and an earned run. Colts starter Ezequiel Astacio earned a no-decision scattering five hits allowing two earned runs while punching out two. Dillas left-handed reliever Coby Mavroulis (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year.

San Angelo and Amarillo will continue their four game series today at Foster Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm, gates will open at 6:05.
