Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Right-hander Eric Mattison tossed six solid innings to win his first game as a professional while Geoff Wagner and Gary Harris homered to lead the St. George Roadrunners to a 6-3 victory over the Chico Outlaws in the opener of a two game mini-series Tuesday night at Nettleton Stadium. The win halted the Roadrunners four game losing streak and was the third straight time they have beaten the Outlaws in Chico.

Wagner got St. George off to a great start in the 1st inning when, with Marcos Villezcas aboard, he sent a Nick Singleton offering over the right field wall...his fifth homer of the year gave the Roadrunners an early 2-0 lead. Harris led off the St. George 2nd with a homer to right...and later in the inning Gerard Haran scored from third on a Scott Dragicevich throwing error to put the Roadrunners up 4-0. In the 3rd inning a pair of two-out base hits and a Singleton wild pitch plated Harris to make the score 5-0...then in the 5th another Outlaws throwing error - this time by David Pierson - allowed Cody Nowlin to come home and give St. George a big 6-0 lead.

The Outlaws got on the board in the bottom of the 5th as Jake Ferris scored from third on a Steve Boggs double play grounder...Jesse Kovacs then followed with a bloop double to left to knock in Jake McLintock to cut the Roadrunners advantage to 6-2. In the 6th Daniel Nava walked and eventually scored on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Brock Ungricht as Chico pulled to within three runs of St. George, but that would be as close as the Outlaws would get, as Roadrunner relievers Mike Renery and Anthony Pluta combined to shut out Chico over the final three innings to lock up the victory and hand the Outlaws their second straight defeat.

Mattison (1-0) allowed just one earned run and five hits en route to the win, with Pluta picking up his first save of the year...Singleton (2-3) struck out nine in seven innings of work but was saddled with the loss. St. George had 10 hits on the night, with Villezcas, Nowlin, Harris and Haran collecting two safeties apiece...Pierson went 3-for-4 to pace the Outlaws seven hit attack. Tuesday's loss dropped Chico's season record to 21-10 and their lead over second place Long Beach in the race for the Golden Baseball League's first half title to two games...St. George improved to 6-25 on the year. The second and final game of the mini-series is slated for Wednesday, with the Outlaws sending right-hander Tyler Pearson (2-2) to the mound...the Roadrunners are expected to start former major leaguer Mark Woodyard (0-5). Game time is 7:05pm...hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
