RoadRunners Defeat SUU in Exhibition

ST. GEORGE, UTAH - In a tune-up for Friday night's opener in Yuma, the St. George RoadRunners hosted an exhibition contest against Southern Utah University. After falling behind early, the "Burnt Orange Machine" used five extra-base hits en route to a convincing 9-4 win over the T-Birds Monday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

The pitching trio of Mark Pawelek, Eric Van Slyke and David Seccombe combined to strikeout 12 SUU hitters while scattering four runs on 12 hits.

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning, OF Greg Burrows blasted a two-run double off the fence in left to put STG in front for good.

The RoadRunners blasted three home runs over the final three innings to ensure victory. INF Juan Serrano hit a three-run bomb in the seventh while OF Brian Martin and DH Jose Rodriguez lifted back-to back solo shots in the ninth.

Leadoff hitter Ruddy Yan went 2-for 4 and scored three runs.

Southern Utah was led by RF Ray Wright who went 4-for-5 with three singles, a double and two RBI.

The RoadRunners kick off the 2009 GBL season on the road this Friday against the Yuma Scorpions. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 Mountain time. Hear the game on Sports Radio 1210, 102/107 The Fox and Network1Sports.com with John Potter beginning at 7:30pm.
