Edinburg Roadrunners News Release
EDINBURG, Texas---The North American League's Edinburg Roadrunners announced the signing of seven players for the upcoming 2011 season, several of which have spent time in affiliated baseball.
Christian "CJ" Beatty, Brandon Wilkerson, Corey Goudeau, Mike Schurz, Jorge Quintero, Stantrel Smith and Matt Chutchian are amongst the newest members that will dawn a Roadrunner uniform in 2011.
Smith and Chutchian are no strangers to baseball in Edinburg as both have been on the side of the opposition. Smith played for the Amarillo Dillas in 2009, where he batted .355 with three home runs, 38 RBIs and 34 stolen bases. Smith was drafted in 2002 by the Cincinnati Reds and in 2003 by the Anaheim Angels. He spent 2010 with three different teams (Worchester-Can Am League, Sioux City-American Association, and Ft. Worth-American Association). Combined, Smith batted .273, four home runs, 44 RBIs and 23 stolen bases in 85 games.
Chutchian was with the San Angelo Colts in 2010. He posted a 3-0 record with two saves in 21 innings and striking out 22. Chutchian played four years at Texas Wesleyan University where he posted a 4-4 record with a 2.45 ERA his senior season with the Rams.
Beatty, Schurz, Wilkerson and Quintero have all seen time in affiliated ball. Beatty was drafted in the 2009 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. In 2010, he spent time at Quad Cities (A) and Palm Beach (A+) where he combined for 10 home runs and a .244 batting average.
Schurz was also taken in the 2009 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. The Virginia-native had his best season in 2009 where he posted a 1.52 ERA in 23 appearances while splitting time between the Gulf Coast League and the New York-Pennsylvania League.
Wilkerson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2006 MLB Draft. He played for the rookie level Astros of the Gulf Coast League in 2009. He is the son of former major leaguer Curtis Wilkerson who played for the Texas Rangers (1983-88), Chicago Cubs (1989-90), Pittsburg Pirates (1991), and the Kansas City Royals (1992-93).
Quintero, the Venezuelan-native, spent four seasons in the Texas Rangers affiliate. In 2009, Quintero appeared in 14 games while splitting time with three different teams in the Rangers affiliate. In 25 innings of work he had a combined ERA of 3.20 while striking out 16.
Goudeau played two seasons at Frank Philips College before being drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 2010 MLB Draft. In his sophomore season, Goudeau pitched in 81 innings and posted a 7-5 record and a 4.56 ERA.
The Roadrunners and new manager Steve Maddock continue to build a competitive team in preparation for the 2011 season.
The season begins on May 25 when they welcome the Rio Grande Valley White Wings to Edinburg Baseball Stadium for a four-game series. Individual Game and Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (956)-380-4446 or Go to www.roadrunnerball.com for more information.
