Mahoning Valley Thunder News Release
Tulsa, OK. - The Mahoning Valley Thunder turned the ball over six times and failed to slow the Tulsa offense contributing to a 79-35 road loss. After the Thunder scored on the game's opening drive, Tulsa rang up 27 straight points which lead to a 27-14 halftime lead that the Talons would not surrender. Mahoning Valley has not won a game away from the Chevrolet Centre since their inaugural 2007 season. The 44 point defeat is the largest margin of defeat in franchise history.
Tulsa Quarterback Justin Allgood was nearly unstoppable in leading the Talons to their second win of the season. Allgood finished 17 of 21 for 214 yards to go along with six scores in just three quarters of work. The Talons scored two defensive touchdowns and four different offensive players found the end zone. Wide Receivers Jeff Hughley and Zac Edwards caught three touchdowns a piece and combined for over 250 receiving yards.
Mahoning Valley was led by Quarterback Blake Powers who replaced starter Davon Vinson early in the third quarter. Powers finished 9 of 13 with 71 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Powers also added a two yard rushing score in the final quarter. Wide Receiver Quorey Payne added two touchdown grabs for the Thunder.
With the win, Tulsa improves to 2-1 on the season while the Thunder drops to 1-2 in 2009. Mahoning Valley heads to Wilkes-Barre, PA next Saturday night to take on the division rival Pioneers in the first of three 2009 meetings.
