Abbotsford Heat News Release
Late goals helped the Rivermen sink the Flames on Sunday at the i wireless Center as Quad City suffered a 3-2 overtime loss. Brad Winchester tied the game with 2:20 left in regulation before Steve Regier scored his second goal of the night at 3:31 of the overtime period. Peter Vandermeer and Ryan Wilson each scored their first goals as Flames in the loss. The Flames finish their opening weekend with a mark of 1-1-1-0.
The Flames penalty kill was featured in the first as they killed off four Rivermen power plays including a double minor and 1:11 of 5-on-3 time. The period also featured some post work as Peoria's Nikolay Lemtyugov hit the goal post on an early chance and the crossbar on a chance late in the frame.
Following the scoreless first period, the teams exchanged goals during a 15-second span of the second period. Peter Vandermeer scored after finding a loose puck just outside of the Peoria crease. The chance was created by hard work in the trenches by the duo of Brett Sutter and David Van der Gulik. The Rivermen responded just 15 seconds later when Steve Regier netted his first goal of the season off a rush into the Quad City zone. Nicholas Drazenovic and Nikolay Lemtyugov earned assists on the marker.
Ryan Wilson netted the first goal of his professional career at 3:04 of the third period. Wilson fired a puck from the slot past Peoria's Ben Bishop during a Flames power play for his inaugural tally. The Rivermen netted a late goal to force the extra session as Brad Winchester jammed a rebound past Flames netminder Matt Keetley with just 2:20 left in regulation time. The Peoria power-play marker forced the extra session.
In the overtime, the Rivermen took all four shots on goal before Steve Regier struck again to end the contest. Regier scored on a goal-mouth scramble to secure the Rivermen's first win of the season.
The Budweiser Flames Forum debuts on Monday night at 6:00 p.m. live from Bleacher Bums. Head Coach Ryan McGill, Peter Vandermeer, Carsen Germyn and Leland Irving will join host Aaron Roof. Fans in attendance will be eligible to win prizes from Budweiser during the broadcast. The show can also be heard on 93.9 FM WYEC.
